We are experienced in estimating detailed landscaping and outdoor construction, including those with significant building work (Example – engineered structures requiring council approval).

We can provide a ‘Ballpark Cost Estimate’ and optional formal ‘Construction Proposal’ when provided with an accurate landscape design (at our discretion).

Plans suitable for construction estimating will:

  • be drawn to scale, with a plan view + relevant elevations
  • include a site survey with contours
  • include a demolition plan showing structures to be removed
  • show all levels and dimensions
  • include a detailed list of specifications (material finishes, colours, plant names/sizes etc)
  • include a planting plan and schedule
  • include a lighting plan and schedule if included in project scope.

Definition can help with preparation of landscape design plans or you can provide plans prepared by a Landscape Architect or professional Landscape Designer. Please note that we are not able to assist with project costing if the above noted items cannot be provided.

Step 1 – Ballpark Cost Estimate

Over several years we have built a quick and accurate ‘ballpark’ estimating tool, specific to quality landscape construction.

It allows us to quickly measure from plans, input generic unit rates, and generate an overall project cost estimate range. Accuracy is usually within 10-15% of the final project cost.

This is suitable for preliminary discussions to determine budget and project viability. Inclusions:

  • 1-2hr onsite meeting if required
  • Brief description of construction work to be completed
  • Total project cost range (estimate)
  • Quote to prepare a detailed formal ‘Construction Proposal’ (if required) Cost – $250 incl. GST

Step 2 – Formal Construction Proposal

An accurate and detailed construction proposal (quote) for an average residential garden with detailed installation work takes approx. 20-40hrs to prepare.

Generic unit rates are not sufficient for high end outdoor construction, with site logistics/ access/ material selections/ construction processes/ engineering/ certification and Australian standards all playing a part in making each project completely unique.

A ‘clean slate’ project with pre house build access will for example be significantly lower cost than a similar construction requiring demolition of an existing garden with tight post house build access and site logistics.

Cost – 0.5% of ‘Ballpark Cost Estimate’ (quoted in Step #1), and fully refundable if Definition Landscape is engaged for construction.
